I think in some ways it is definitely a valid comparison. Fat people are seen as unhealthy and lazy in the same way that you might be seen as unhealthy or unclean, despite the fact that neither is an evidence-based opinion. In looking at our own struggles, we can definitely find common ground in understanding what other people are feeling.
I will definitely have to check out that episode of Easy! Actually, it has some good people in it, so maybe I’ll watch the whole thing. I don’t think it’s forced fat-blindness. It’s representation. Yes, that character is probably going to run into a lot of shitty people saying shitty things about her weight. But it’s important for people to see and try to understand that fat people can be happy, fat people have feelings, fat people date and have sex.
One of the reasons that I liked “Isn’t It Romantic” was because it was an aspect of the character, surely. But it wasn’t about that. The movie could just as easily have existed with a straight-sized actress in the lead role and worked. I like Rebel Wilson because she doesn’t ignore her body, but she also doesn’t use it as her entire schtick.
