Why shouldn’t they? I mean, there are a lot of writers on Medium. Not all of them are good writers. In fact, there are a lot of bad writers and content mill-type creators here. There are articles that are barely readable. Those people don’t deserve to earn as much as someone who writes something skilled and beautiful.

If someone does the work of writing 6–8–10 hours a day on topics people connect with and are interested in, why don’t they have just as much right as a novelist or big-time-editorialist to earn money from it? This isn’t kindergarten, where everyone deserves a medal for just trying their best.
